Frameless Glass Fitting Instructions

  1. The frameless glass system aluminium shoe is designed to ideally fix to steel or concrete. Wood joists may need to be reinforced with a steel section.
  2. The aluminium shoe is laid out in position if in 2 or more sections use a string line to ensure the shoe is running straight.
  3. Mark and drill the fixing holes into the steel / concrete / wood and tack bolt the shoe down.
  4. Using a spirit level ensure that the shoe is running level and plumb as this is vital when the glass is fitted. Use thin packers if required to level up.
  5. The “L” shaped nylon packer is dropped into the shoe every 250mm, the glass lifted into position and rested down on the packer.
  6. The nylon wedge is pushed down into the slot and the aluminium wedge pushed in between the nylon packer and aluminium shoe every 250mm.
  7. The aluminium wedge is now hammered in tight using a bolster and nylon hammer.
  8. Repeat for the next glass panel ensuring you have a small gap between the panels.
  9. Fix the rubber gasket and slotted handrail if a handrail is required.
  10. Fit the stainless steel cladding to the side of the shoe using bonding glue.

Hints

  • It is vital that the shoe is plumb as 1mm out at the bottom may be 10mm out at the top.
  • Toughened glass does sometimes “bow” slightly when it is heated for toughening. Check each panel with a straight edge and ensure any panels that may be bowed are fitted the same way around.
  • It can be difficult to ensure perfect alignment of the glass panels so a small stainless steel channel is sometimes used to clip over the top edge of the glass or a slotted handrail.
  • It may be useful to fit the outer edge cladding if working from the inside before fitting the glass.
