Frameless Glass Fitting Instructions
- The frameless glass system aluminium shoe is designed to ideally fix to steel or concrete. Wood joists may need to be reinforced with a steel section.
- The aluminium shoe is laid out in position if in 2 or more sections use a string line to ensure the shoe is running straight.
- Mark and drill the fixing holes into the steel / concrete / wood and tack bolt the shoe down.
- Using a spirit level ensure that the shoe is running level and plumb as this is vital when the glass is fitted. Use thin packers if required to level up.
- The “L” shaped nylon packer is dropped into the shoe every 250mm, the glass lifted into position and rested down on the packer.
- The nylon wedge is pushed down into the slot and the aluminium wedge pushed in between the nylon packer and aluminium shoe every 250mm.
- The aluminium wedge is now hammered in tight using a bolster and nylon hammer.
- Repeat for the next glass panel ensuring you have a small gap between the panels.
- Fix the rubber gasket and slotted handrail if a handrail is required.
- Fit the stainless steel cladding to the side of the shoe using bonding glue.
Hints
- It is vital that the shoe is plumb as 1mm out at the bottom may be 10mm out at the top.
- Toughened glass does sometimes “bow” slightly when it is heated for toughening. Check each panel with a straight edge and ensure any panels that may be bowed are fitted the same way around.
- It can be difficult to ensure perfect alignment of the glass panels so a small stainless steel channel is sometimes used to clip over the top edge of the glass or a slotted handrail.
- It may be useful to fit the outer edge cladding if working from the inside before fitting the glass.
